commentary thesis

Each and every year the UCF student enrollment gross by 5,000 students and with these students comes the need for additional parking on campus for students. These additional students add to the already 53,000 enrolled today who might have cars and they too need parking. UCF already has a problem with the amount of parking the offer to students and the additional students that are added every year do not help.

commentary outline:

Commentary Outline:

Intro:

In my introduction paragraph I will start off my giving background information about the problem and why it continues to become more and more of a problem. There will also be a strong thesis statement in the paragraph giving insight to the problem and about all the people that it affects. Address the problem, why is there not adequate parking for all 53,000 + students on campus?

First paragraph:

I will talk about the research information I found out about why the problem gets worse and why it is not getting any better. Tell about the people I interviewed and what they thought about the problem and if they are having the same problem or not. Tell why the issue is so important and affects me so much. Tell why it affects so many people in negative ways and all the problems it causes for them and others.

Second paragraph:

I will talk about some new things that I think will help make the problem better or at least stop it from getting worse from year to year. Talk about why the problem is so hard to address and why it is not being focused on more.

Third paragraph:

Tell about some of the issues that made the problem a lot worse such as the cutting of bus routes and the closing of an entire parking lot during the fall semester.

Fourth paragraph:

Tell about how the situation could be better and if it wasn’t a problem how much better it would be for everyone. Talk again about the things that could be done to make this possible. Give examples.

The Hypocrisy Bowl

Matt Zeisloft, Rowen Divine, Mike Cinicolo

1. The commentary focuses on the exploitation of women's sexuality on television and how hypocritical people are about where and when the exploitation takes place.
2. Yes, the author does give an interesting introduction into the issue because the author paints a clear picture about what was going on and gives clear insight into the situation at hand. He tells us exactly what the article is going to be about by giving the Janet Jackson example and then going more in depth.
3. The author gives really good examples about what is going on in society at that point but does not go to in depth about the current issue and the commentary is written in a more humorous context then a serious one. It is clearly directed at society as a whole to show everyone what is becoming more acceptable, but it is seems as if it is written more for a younger crowd.
4. The possible causes of the trend the author is exploring is that sex sells. It is also that we are living in a constantly evolving world that is much more open to sexuality and not so shy about the topic.
5. The author does not go into detail about anything in his or her own life that could have been the possible causes of this trend. However, he does give example of others reactions to the issue that could possibly be the cause of the trend.
6. The author's stance on this topic is that they are more liberal then conservative and think that people are overreacting to the situation.
7. The significance that the author sees in this trend is that it is going to continue to happen because sex sells and broadcasting companies are going to continue to do whatever they need to in order to promote their network and get viewers.

letter to a friend:

Dear Jeff:
How have you been? I feel as I i have not talked to you since high school. How are things at UF? How are your classes going? Things here are great! I absolutely love UCF and all my classes are going well and my professors are amazing! My new apartment is amazing, it is so cool to actually live off campus and on my own. The only thing i do not like is the parking situation on campus. It is absolutely ridiculous! There are over 53,000 students that attend UCF and you would think that they would have enough parking to accommodate for all these students right? Ha keep dreaming, it is nearly impossible to find a parking spot here on campus for class. Sometimes i have to leave my apartment two hours before class even starts just so i have enough time to find a spot on campus and get to my class on time. I hope you aren't having the same problems in Gainesville. The parking garages and lots that UCF currently have on campus is simply not enough. What has UCF done to fix this you ask? Nothing! In fact they made it worse by cutting bus routes and they even closed an entire parking lot to do construction. Right in the middle of the fall semester, what were they thinking. Do you have any ideas on what they could do that might help out the situation? i don't know why they don't address this problem fully. Do you have any problems parking at UF? The only real solutions offered here are to carpool or ride the bus. There is a way for you to get your very own parking spot if you live in the towers but those cost $475 and what full time student would have enough money to pay for that! Riding the bus nowadays doesn't even help that much due to the fact that they are cutting routes, but the buses do still go around and they usually pick up in intervals of 15 minutes which is really good. Carpooling is hard since you are not likely to have the same exact schedule as one of your friends but if you can find one that is great. In my opinion what i think they should do is build at least one more garage parking lot on campus. Those garages are pretty big and although they are not always in the best place and you might have to walk a little ways, at least you are on campus and can walk to campus instead of driving around in circles in search of a spot. Well i hope everything is going well with you. If you have any input let me know and i hope to hear from you soon!

Your friend,
Mike

commentary interview assignment

Parking on UCF campus.

Questions about commentary:

  • Why has UCF not fully addressed this problem? They have other more important things to worry about.
  • What can be done to help resolve this issue? Build more parking garages or lots, offer more shuttle routes.
  • Why is there not adequate parking for all students on campus? With so many students it is hard to accommodate them all at one time.
  • Why would UCF close an entire parking lot during the fall semester and not during summer? They had to get the construction done.
  • Why are bus routes being cut? Budget cuts.
  • How do you know what you know? (evidence) observations
  • Who are you to the subject? (perspective) A student and it effects me as well
  • How is this event connected to other events? (patterns or opposing forces) Students often have to park illegally and then get ticketed from parking services.
  • What if things were different? (suppositions/predictions) Parking would be stress free, students could get to class on time, and would Save everybody time and money.

commentary

Every year the University of Central Florida is adding more and more students to the already 53,000 already attending the University. Now, you would think that with all these extra students the University would do something to help accommodate them all on campus in regards to parking, but no, day after day students drive around for hours looking for a single place to park just so they can go to class. I think that this is absolutely ridiculous, it should not take more than ten minutes to find a parking spot on campus. Students have more important things to worry about other than leaving their apartment two hours before class actually starts to ensure themselves enough time to find a spot and get to class on time. You would that the University would try to do something to fix this problem but no, all they have done is make the problem worse. They have cut bus routes which reduce the number of students taking the bus which increases the number of students that have to drive to campus. They also closed an entire parking lot next to do construction. I have to say they picked the worst time to do construction, I mean who picks the middle of the fall semester to close an entire parking lot.
